Our native woodlice are easy to care for and ideal for studying in the lab or classroom. Woodlice are a convenient way to study animal behaviour and principles of ecology on a small scale.

The cultures include Oniscus asellus, Porcellio scaber or other common native species, the exact mixture depends on seasonal availability.

Woodlice are packed with damp tissue and some rotten wood to act as a food source.

Woodlice will last a week in the tub supplied if they are kept correctly. They should be kept cool and damp but not wet.

Should they be needed after this then they should be kept as follows:

Keep in a well ventilated, lidded container, with a substrate of leaflitter.

This should be kept cool and damp. Add pieces of rotten wood, tree bark or damp kitchen roll for the woodlice to congregate beneath. The main part of their diet will consist of the damp wood and paper, but small slices of potato or apple can be added to supplement this.
